EiO Is Recruiting New Board Members

We are looking for new Board members (one willing and able to step into the role of president) to work with other board members and staff to lead and develop EiO in the next stage of its journey.

We are at a pivotal point in the organization’s development. We are looking to build off the artistic successes of the past five years and expand our program offerings in the key areas of 1) development of new works; 2) innovative media projects; 3) partnerships with peer organizations; and 4) full productions of exemplary work.  We are looking to grow our budget and fundraising base as well as build strong and meaningful relationships with foundations and government agencies.

We are particularly interested in individuals with experience working on nonprofit boards and with foundations that support the creation of new opera.

Job Description

Board of Directors

The Board has the power to make decisions that will govern Experiments in Opera. The responsibilities of the Board are as follows:

  • to ensure the organization complies with its governing document;
  • to ensure that the organization pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document;
  • to ensure the organization applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives;
  • to contribute actively to the Board’s role in giving firm strategic direction to the organization, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets;
  • to safeguard the good name and values of the organization;
  • to ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organization;
  • to participate in fundraising activities with and on behalf of the organization;
  • to ensure the financial stability of the organization;
  • to protect and manage the property of the organization.

In addition, the Board members support the organization by:

  • ensuring that the organization has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these;
  • being responsible for the performance of the organization and its culture;
  • ensuring that the organization complies with all legal and regulatory requirements;
  • acting as guardians of the organization’s tangible and intangible assets, taking due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
  • ensuring that the organization’s governance is of the highest possible standard.

The above list of duties is indicative only and not exhaustive. As well as the various statutory duties, each Board member should make full use of any specific skills, knowledge, or experience to help the Board make good decisions.

The Board meets four times a year and board members are requested to attend all meetings.


Board members serve a three-year term and are eligible for reappointment. All Board members give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the organization.
